The sad thing about these three time frames is these were all eventual bankruptcies of the US government. President Grant ended up, selling Washington DC to foreign powers, creating a separate corporation. FDR ended up and slaving all of us, as our income tax was pledged to the debt. Hopefully, when all is said and done, we can break free from our current government enslavement.
It is unfortunate the image supplied with the article is MISLEADING. Because THANKSGIVING started because it was the NATIVES in the territory now we call USA who helped with food the STARVING EUROPEANS, not the other way around as depicted in the painting having the natives in a lower thanking position. The day refers to the helping actions the Europeans RECEIVED, not as it is presented
Sorry about that! ScheerPost chose the image. I think the general perception is as you said -- the pilgrims were giving thanks for help from the natives.
It is unfortunate the image conveys the opposite. However history is clear about the true act of help the Europeans received, and the real reason for the day's celebration.
I think the idea of the artist was that the pilgrims were thanking the natives for their help by serving them. If you invite someone over for "Thanksgiving," you're the host or hostess doing the serving.
I'm sorry dear Ellen if that had been the artist idea, the ones shown kneeling on the ground looking up to the givers, the natives, would be reversed in the image. To me it's clear what the intention of the image has been. To misrepresent a historic fact because in the artist mind it was not possible to accept the truth. He actually felt shameful to show the true facts
I disagree. You can't serve people by sitting on the ground. Here's a writeup on it, which includes that classic early 20th century painting. It says "Celebrating a fall harvest was an English tradition at the time and the pilgrims had much to celebrate." So it was their traditional feast, and they invited the local tribespeople to thank them for their help. The hostess was doing the serving. She probably said "take a seat!" :-) https://historyofmassachusetts.org/the-first-thanksgiving/
You state "You can't serve people by sitting on the ground" and that's exactly what the painting conveys!! It is the natives who are sitting on the ground! And this, according to the artist, is what's taking place.
Check what is said about his work, The American Philosophical Society claims that his historical paintings confuse "verity with verisimilitude",[7] and art historian Gerald Ackerman describes them as "splendid in the accuracy of accessories, clothing and especially in the details of land conveyances and ships", but "extremely dry in execution and rather monotonous in composition. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Leon_Gerome_Ferris
What really needs to happen is that government do its job and solve problems. For example, fix public education such that all students get an adequate education rather than propose vouchers. If the public education system is "broken", determine the problem and fix it. This is but one issue that adds to that cost and there are many more. The ultimate problem may be human nature, such as that saying goes, "democracy is the worst system except for the all the rest", and so enough people have no interest in actually solving a problem simply because they either don't accept that it is a problem or that they have ulterior motives.
HA HA HA dear Harriet, you really have been brainwashed by the US Media publishing your governments lies. Those LIES attempt in convincing you and the US taxpayer to spend thousands of millions of dollars in a losing war against the Russians. OPEN YOUR EYES!!

Have a very happy Thanksgiving Ellen!
Thanks and you too!
Great Insights! As you know, we the people need public banking ie we the people need to reclaim control/ownership of our Public Treasuries.
Thanks!

Don't like spending? Fix the GD problems.
Ellen should be Treasury Secetary of the USA!
Thanks but I don't think they'd have me!
3% of our D.O.D. has allowed Ukraine to fight for us all. They have destroyed 40% of the Russian military.
How many 100s of thousands of young men and civilians need to die for this policy for you to stop eagerly supporting it?
